According to the CDC.gov website, more than 1/3 of adults and 17% of children in America are obese. Sedentary lifestyles and inactivity are major contributors to this epidemic. The problem of obesity contributes to many health hazards, such as heart disease, metabolic syndrome, Type II diabetes, and many other problems.
I am in my mid-30’s and after an 18 year period of a sedentary lifestyle, I decided I didn’t want to be another statistic of overweight America! I decided to take charge of my health and my life. Last summer (2011), I committed myself to a healthy lifestyle and lost 24 pounds over the next few months. A few, but not all, pounds creeped back and now I am at a plateau, going neither up nor down. Time to go take charge again of my health!
I was at my ideal weight in high school. Slowly, over the course of several years fat stealthily found its way onto my body. As a young adult, I had depression problems. I didn’t even realize I had them until much later. I was also a product of “good ole Southern cooking” – everything I learned to cook was fried in vegetable oil. Vegetables were french fries and drinks included coke and sweet tea.
When I hit 35, I was jolted into reality: I was at the midpoint of my life (if life expectancy is indeed 70) and I was in danger of not even living to age 70. I have three children, so I need to be around for them for quite a while – and not to mention any potential grandkids!
Short-term goal: loss of 10 pounds.
I’ll be posting weekly progress notes, dietary notes, and fitness notes.
